Fenrir crouched low in the grass, his tail whipping side to side as he watched the beasts going about their daily lives. There was one person in particular that he was waiting for and hoping that he would show up soon. Then, he saw him. With a loud mew of excitement, he leaped out of the grass, bounded over, and pounced on his favorite Red Squirrel, licking Sarin's face happily in greeting.
One of the first things anybeast would notice about Fenrir as opposed to the other Dibbuns was how he acted more like an animal than an intelligent being. Fenrir's only example had ever been his father, who had been working so much to keep the two of them alive that he didn't have any chances to teach Fenrir even the basics. As a result, the Dibbun still walked on four legs and mewed, rather than talking.

Sarin had been busy creating a new poison in his room, putting a wooden sign up saying, ‘POISON-MAKING! KEEP OUT!’ Sarin always put this sign up when he was poison making, he didn’t like being disturbed. Poison making required diligent concentration and the red squirrel couldn’t do that with little ones squealing about the place and incessant chatter of some of the other Abbey-dwellers. It took an hour to make the new poison. Once Sarin was satisfied with the poison, he heaved a sigh and went to the lawn for a well-deserved break.
He had only managed to sit down on the lush green grass when a small blur of white bounded up to him and licked his face. Sarin chuckled and steadied himself with his left paw. “Hello Fenrir!” greeted Sarin, holding the ball of fluff. He needs to talk and walk soon. I know! “Fenrir, why don’t I teach you how to talk? You need to learn. Ok, so what word should I teach you first? Oh, I know! Fenrir, say Da. Get it, Da.” He hoped Ioalus wouldn’t mind. The Dibbun needed to learn so that he could interact with others well.

Fenrir mewed and lay down beside Sarin, purring comfortably as he nuzzled Sarin. Then he started trying to get Fenrir to repeat a word. He cocked his head to the side, watching him for a few moments before he looked down a little, obviously concentrating intensely. At first all that came out were a few short mews. He closed his eyes and sighed a little, then concentrated a little more. "MmmmnnnnggDA! Da!" Fenrir grinned as he looked up at Sarin, pleased with himself. He'd managed to say it after a couple tries. "DA!"

Sarin watched as Fenrir tried to say the word. The cub only managed to mew at first but then he said the word. Sarin gasped in shock. Fenrir was a fast learner it seemed. Ioalus hadn’t had time to teach Fenrir to talk so Sarin had suddenly vowed to teach the Dibbun. He just hoped that the snow leopard would be alright with it. The red squirrel clapped in applause and smiled. He liked Fenrir and was glad that Ioalus had decided to stay nearby. It gave Sarin this well-timed opportunity to teach Fenrir a much needed lesson.
“Well done, Fenrir! Ok, now, say the word grass,” said Sarin, emphasising each letter. He was sure that Fenrir would get this. He quickly examined the area, smiling at the beasts strolled past going about their daily business.

Fenrir grinned at Sarin's praise and applause, glad he was pleasing his friend. Then Sarin told him to say another word and he concentrated, trying to think. He knew the word, knew how it was said, now he just had to get his mouth to work to the word. "G-graaaa-graaa-aaaaaaass. Grrrrrass! Grass!" He hopped excitedly and looked up, grinning. "Grass!"

Sarin clapped and smiled. Fenrir was a fast learner. The red squirrel then mentally predicted that he could teach Fenrir at least dozen or more words by the end of the day. Sarin actually found this to be quite fun. Sarin found Fenrir to be interesting, since he wasn’t an Abbey Dibbun, which meant that he needed to be careful on how he tutored Fenrir. Wait a minute, Fenrir may not be an Abbey-dweller but he was still a Dibbun so Sarin could teach him the normal way.
“Excellent! Now say Sarin. Sa-rin,” said the Poisonmaster. If Fenrir could say his name then Fenrir could shout his name when he wanted. Ioalus could then have a conversation with his son with ease. Baby steps though. Fenrir needed to be taught the basics and then the advanced. Sarin would also have to be patient, since the cub was only a Dibbun.

Fenrir cocked his head to the side as Sarin said his own name for the cub to repeat. He blinked a little, then perked his ears forward. Sarin... it was a strange word. He didn't know if he could say it. He thought a little, trying to figure it out. "Saaaa... Ssssaaaarrriiiii" He looked up at him and smiled at him, doing his best to say his name. "Sari!" He tried, but he couldn't get the N in, so it came out Sari.

Sarin watched as the cub cocked his head to side, trying to decipher how to say the name. When the cub said Sari instead of Sarin, the red squirrel chuckled. Maybe getting the cub to speak his name wasn’t a good move. He was a Dibbun and a beginner in talking after all. But Sarin was determined to get the cub to say his name properly.
“Close enough, but listen carefully. Sarin,” said the red squirrel, emphasising the ‘n’ at the end. If the cub couldn’t say Sarin, then Sari would have to do for now, until he got better at speaking that is. Sarin suddenly had a whole lesson’s worth of ideas in his mind. The red squirrel would first teach the cub basic words. Simple phrases and sentences next and then the advanced stuff.

His ears perked forward again as Sarin emphasized the N. Sarin wanted him to say it properly, but Fenrir wasn't sure he could. Still, he would try. "Sariiiiiiimmm." He frowned, that didn't sound right. He would try again. "Sariiiiiinnnnn. Saaaarrrinnnn. S-SaaaaRIN!" He looked up, grinning. "SARIN!"

Sarin was astounded by Fenrir’s fast learning skills. Sarin was thinking of what he could teach the young Dibbun. Well, the Dibbun needed to learn manners. It was something that all Dibbuns learnt manners from an early age so Sarin would do that. He’d teach Fenrir to be polite among his fellow beast. Yes, the red squirrel would teach the cub polite words.
“Well done, Fenrir! Ok, now say please. Please.” said, emphasising each word so that Fenrir could understand how word sounded. The other Dibbun said pwease, which isn’t too bad. They would learn the proper way soon. He adjusted his cloak and waited for the cub to say the word.

Sarin continued, praising the cub and making him purr a little in contentment. Then came another word. Please. He perked his ears up. He'd heard that word a lot from his father. He said it often when they were having hard times and he seemed to be talking to someone invisible. He knew how the world worked, but had never tried it. "P-pwwwweeeeasssse. Pwease!" He smiled and his tail flicked a little. He saw it out of the corner of his eye and turned, trying to attack it. Of course, his tail moved as he did and he found his paws empty. He looked around, then saw his tail again, crouching as he watched it flick back and forth before he swatted out and caught it. He grinned and started rolling a little, playing with his tail.

Sarin chuckled as Fenrir chased his tail. It appeared that their lesson had ended but at least the cub had learnt a few words. They would continue later. The red squirrel suddenly had an idea. He would teach Fenrir things that Ioalus may not. He would do it in stages and either do it in the form of games or like how he had done it just now. Sarin now had a plan and he had unknowingly put it effect already.
The red squirrel got up, dusting himself down once he had, and picked up Fenrir. He tickled his arm pits and chuckled. “Let’s get something to eat, young’un,” said Sarin, picking his staff up and then going across the lawn.

Fenrir laughed and squirmed a little as Sarin picked him up, tickling his sides. As Sarin carried him, he curled up in his arm, purring happily. He liked having new friends. It had been fun with just his father, but it was nice having others to interact with too. He lift his head and looked up at Sarin, smiling before he nuzzled the squirrel's arm, kneading the fabric of his tunic a little.

Sarin strolled inside the Abbey, still carrying the cub. He bade hello to the other friendly beasts within the Abbey walls. The smell of freshly prepared fruit and elderberry cordial wafted through the air and Sarin glided over to where it was. Immediately though, a hedgehog scurried over. “Sarin Bowleaf, don’t you dare eat that fruit salad there!” said the hedgehog, paws on paws. Her face softened when she noticed Fenrir. “Aww, bless yer, Bowleaf. Lookin’ after Ioalus’s young’un. Here ya go, sweetie.” She grabbed a bottle of milk and poured some of the contents into a Dibbun-sized cup. Sarin put the staff against the counter and held the cup. He gave the Dibbun some and held it. The cub would say when he’d want some.
“Nittles, when is lunch?” asked Sarin. “An hour.

Fenrir lift his head as they entered the kitchen and smiled at Nittles as she scurried over, then mewed when he saw the milk and stuck his nose in the cup right away, drinking what he could before Sarin took the cup away. He meowed in protest and swatted at the cup, trying to get it back to where he could drink from it. When he found he couldn't reach it, he looked up at Sarin, mewing again. But then he realized Sarin would want the little one to be polite, like he'd been teaching him. "Mmmmmore? Pwease?" He looked at the cup and swatted again, squirming a little. He'd much prefer to have the cup on the table so he could drink freely. He was very hungry.
