Name: Salika Arclight – The Wanderer
Gender: Female
Age: 80 seasons old a.k.a 20 years old
Species: Hare
Personality: Most people would describe Salika as a flighty person, who does not like to stand still for any amount of time. She has a habit of talking too fast and rambling a little, although this is accidental. She is a very affectionate hare to those that she knows, and her energy makes sure that everybody keeps on their toes. She is quite impatient, and is one of those who tends to jump first and think later, often getting herself and others into trouble.
In addition, Salika takes her job very seriously. She takes great pride in being one of the speediest scouts within Redwall Abbey. She likes to race other creatures, although few have yet matched her. She is highly competitive, but is not a bad loser, and will take constructive criticism with good grace. She is very protective of Redwall Abbey and its inhabitants, though she is not a good fighter, useful only with a dagger or shortsword.
Many people find Salika irritating due to her nature; she can seem demanding, particularly as she is stubborn. She is easily distracted, with a short attention span unless she is really interested in something, and this can be frustrating if you are attempting to outline something to her and she just won't listen. She is generally tolerated though, as for all her faults, Salika is usually quite a likeable person with her good nature and optimistic outlook on life.
Despite her loyalty to Redwall, it cannot be denied that she is, essentially, a wanderer. She finds it difficult to settle into one place for any extended amount of time, and will often partake in nightly walks to exhaust herself into sleep. She has been at Redwall for just over a year and a half, longer than she has stayed at any other place in her memory. Perhaps she will stay and perhaps she will leave; who can say?
Appearance: Salika has the general appearance of a cape hare. Her body has an all-round 'lithe' look to it, and she appears very streamlined, with a narrow, angled head and a flexible torso. Her legs in particular are very long when fully stretched out, but are springy and muscular, giving her the capability to run very far and very fast. Her tail is small and bobbed, but is smoother than a rabbit's. Her ears are very long, and stand upright unless she is running, when they are pinned to her back.
Her fur is a range of browns in colour; it is mainly a light fawn, but has flecks and patches of caramel gold and bronze in it. Her paws are slightly darker, being a dusky brown. Her eyes are very intelligent looking, and are soft amber. She has a streak of white fur that runs from the underside of her jaw to just under her tail, covering her belly and chest.
She is usually clothed in a light-tan tunic, with a sheath for her shortsword on her left side. The sword itself is short and cruel looking, with a slightly curved blade. The base of the blade is serrated a little, making it even more wicked.
Allegiance: Redwall
Weapons: Shortsword, about 13 inches long. Silver in colour, with a curved blade and serrated hilt. The grip has no handguard, and is dark bronze in colour.
Position: Scout
History: Salika Arclight, also known as the Wanderer to many, was born in a land far to the north of Redwall Abbey. It was very cold most of the time, with a thin layer of frost on the ground even in the summer months, with the winter bringing thick snowfall. The lands were unnamed to most, but to those who lived there, it was called Eventide, for the beautiful patterns reflected on the ice during an aurora in the twilight hours.
Salika's parents were both hares; her mother was a standard cape hare, a healer who had been born in Mosswood, but had travelled all around the world before coming to stay in Eventide. Her father was a snowshoe hare, who had lived his entire life in the snowy lands. He had no particular profession, but ran his house as an inn of sorts for travellers. He was known as the fastest hare in Eventide, even able to race a flying eagle and win.
Salika's early life is pretty much a blur to her. She remembers vague things, like the smell of her mother's cooking and the sound of her father's singing. Sadly, she does not remember their faces, as it has been far too long since she has seen them. Sometimes small fragments of memory come to her in dreams, but she has usually forgotten them come morning.
From an early age, Salika would listen to the stories that the travellers told. They were usually quite happy to entertain their young audience, and she would sit enthralled. She particularly recalls the story of a badger. His name was Ramar Grassbarrow and he hailed from Salamandastron. He would regal her with tales of battles he had participated in, great feasts and suchlike.
Looking back, Salika would probably confess that it was Ramar who gave her the inclination to travel. She loved to imagine the places and events that he told her about, and thought it would be twice as good to see them with her own eyes. Tragedy soon struck Eventide.
It was late winter, and there were many travellers staying at the inn. Salika was asking the latest group all about their journeys, and they were responding in good humour. Seconds later, the alarms went up and the scouts raced back into the settlement, crying at the top of their lungs of vermin. A great tide of panic ensued, and Salika was bundled out of the house by her mother and father.
As the creatures stampeded out of the town, the vermin swarmed through. The healthy male residents of Eventide took to arms and fought back, including Salika's father. She was also, at some point, separated from her mother in the chaos. She followed the others, allowed herself to be dragged with the tide.
Twelve years old, and with no parents to take care of her, Salika found herself in a small otter holt. The earth here was greener and fresher than the frozen soil in Eventide, and it felt strange to her feet. The water was not frozen, but was clean and cool. A mother otter by the name of Willow Springpad found her and fussed over her, feeding her and looking after her.
Willow became Salika's adoptive parent for the next two years, watching out for her as well as she did with her own pups. However, when she was fourteen, Salika decided that she was old enough to take the world on alone. She prepared well, and three days after her fourteenth birthday, left the holt.
For the next four years, Salika travelled from place to place. She became a skilled swordswoman in this time. She never stayed at any place longer than a month or so, and this attitude soon garnered her the reputation of 'Wanderer'. Soon, however, she found Redwall Abbey.
At first, it was just temporary like all her past homes. Slowly, however, Salika fell into the routine of the abbey, and took on the position of scout. She was always ready to leave, but never did, and has been there now for a year and a half or so. She is tensed up for the trials that lie ahead, and a question is posed to herself; Will she stay?
